Parenting can often be daunting and difficult. When at a loss, your library is a great place to start. Our libraries offer a variety of resources to parents, including services that help them learn about their child’s development. I’m going to touch on a couple these services: Parents as Teachers and KidSight. These two organizations come to our libraries to serve kids and families free of charge.

Parents as Teachers

Parents as Teachers is an international service provided to more than 200,000 kids. They meet with families directly at the library, focusing on kids birth through kindergarten. Their goal is to discuss strategies and resources to help parents prepare their children for a stronger start in life and greater success in school. Parents as Teachers will be at the Columbia Public Library from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on November 10 and November 21 to meet with families free of charge.

KidSight

KidSight knows that healthy vision is vital for a child’s cognitive development and success in school. KidSight comes to the library to give kids 6 months to 6 years old free vision screenings. These screenings heighten the chances that potential vision problems will be caught early enough to be treated properly. KidSight will be at the Columbia Public Library from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on November 14 to do free screenings.

Parents as Teachers and KidSight also visit our library branches in Ashland and Fulton. While there are no current visits scheduled, there will be visits scheduled in the future. If you have any questions about these resources or would like to learn about our other parenting resources, please call or visit the any of our branches.
